WHILE THE BIRTHDAY CANDLES BURN OUT

This piece (almost a joke) begins with an improbable canon based on the music of “Happy birthday to you”. In the central part the melody appears in minor tonality, and it is exposed by the piano while flute and violin have a marginal role. The character becomes less bright, as if the weight of the loneliness of the piano was felt. After the repetition of the canon in A major the piece end with a coda, based on a fragment of the theme, and alternatively exposed by the flute and the violin accompanied by the piano. end with a coda, based on a fragment of the theme, and alternatively exposed by the flute and the violin accompanied by the piano. But through small, almost unnoticed changes the music transforms itself, up to remember, in the final measures, that of a famous song of the film “Cinderella” (Bibbidi Bobbidi Bù): almost as if the musicians, tormented by the disease of Alzheimer, had completely lost the thread of the discourse. To make the end even more grotesque the accords become, almost suddenly, dissonant and bitonal.
In a birthday party the wait for burning out the candles on the cake would be clearly too much long: here explained the ironic name of the piece.
